There’s a common misconception that shoppers are turning their backs on brick and mortar stores in favour of online shopping for Christmas gifts and groceries but we know this isn't the case...
Christmas is a time where most shoppers admit to splashing out and spending more than usual, especially on luxury items, according to Kantar. 89% of those surveyed admit that they are willing to spend more at Christmas time on higher quality food and groceries, whilst acknowledging their preference to do so in store. This was down to a number of benefits including professional advice at the point of purchase, the after sales service and the ability to physically compare products easily.
With this influx of customers shopping in-store to compare brands and products, there is an obvious need for merchandising support in order to ensure availability. Grocery Multiples are further investing in quality and price competitive products giving consumers even more reason to choose them over an online store during the festive period, according to Retail Analysis. To ensure this opportunity is grabbed it's important that brands have high product availability levels to achieve maximum sales during busy periods.
Despite increasing concerns about inflation, Retail Analysis found that there has been an increase in shoppers who believe that Christmas is a time to treat themselves and their family, especially in grocery. 6 out of 10 shoppers also say that they don’t have a set budget for groceries during this time which further supports the argument that Christmas is viewed by shoppers as the time of year to splash out.
